Creative Writing Camp – The “Best Summer Program for Kids”

“The BEST camp in Houston for unleashing the creativity of young authors.”

Are you looking for a summer activity that could impact your child’s life?  For more than 25 years Creative Writing Camp has provided a unique setting that challenges students entering kindergarten through 12th grade to learn the power of words and practice their creativity and expression.  Hesitant writers bloom in the supportive environment as they experience different ways of writing and develop the confidence to think, “I am a writer, now!”  Children who already see themselves as authors develop new skills, stretch their creativity, and enjoy inspiration and mentoring from professional writers.

Creative Writing Camp, which has been voted “Best Summer Program for Kids” by the Houston Press and featured by Houstonia magazine, is jointly sponsored by Rice University’s School Literacy and Culture and Writers in the Schools.  Students receive personal encouragement in small classes led by two adults, generally an experienced teacher and a professional writer.  Together, the students, teachers, and writers explore a variety of genres such as poetry, plays, personal essays and fiction. Through these interactions, students develop confidence in their writing skills as well as a love of writing itself.

Field trips to area art museums or visits from local artists help students extend their creativity.  Camp concludes with a student reading or culminating performance and students bring home anthologies or portfolios of their work.
